The stones may have been deliberately toppled, though when and why is uncertain. Excavations found cremation and artefacts from several periods.
The high plateau setting and enclosed interior suggest gathering and ceremony at a place visible across the surrounding uplands.

Older accounts link the monument with Druids, while modern visitors sometimes treat its recumbent stones as places of spiritual reflection.
Remember: folklore tells us what later people believed about a place. It is not necessarily what its builders believed.
